Handmade Con Amor

Today, I found out that someone is saying terrible things about me. Terrible and out-of -this-world-ridiculous-made-up-hate about me.

First thing I thought:
If I were bored or crazy enough to start a rumor, or make up ugly stuff about someone just for the heck of it, I would probably choose something closer to the truth. Honestly.

Second thing I thought:
I have worked so hard to live in peace and loving happiness in my home and with those I love. Part of what has made this possible (with it´s obvious ups and downs) is the fact that I have surrounded myself with people who love me for who I am, who search for inner peace and strive to find happiness, as I do, with hard work and a smile. I isolated myself from people or situations that harmed me, or my loved ones. So, I ask myself, why does this happen?

I can only think it´s because, working towards that beautiful silence, is precisely that: work. Meticulous, everyday work. And work wouldn´t be work if it were easy-peesy-japaneesee, if there weren´t obstacles to overcome.

So I guess the obstacle of the day will be the fact that tomorrow I will walk into a room full of people, this very imaginative person amoung them, with my head held high, and smile.

Did I think of not walking into this particular room filled with these particular people? YES. But I guess that, because this room also holds something dear to me, something I have dreamed of doing for years now, I would only be betraying myself. Backing up into a corner when I have done nothing wrong. Nothing AT ALL. Why should I miss out on something I want to do so badly because someone´s got a chip on their shoulder the size of a small building? Well, I could probably find a bigillion reasons not to go (all backed up by the fact that I have grown to detest destructive confrontation, and I have always had a hard time walking into places filled with strangers = fear). So, yep, flashback: first day of school, bullies around every corner, stomach ache, thinking, "maybe mustard under the armpits WILL give me a fever this time around. Maybe I just need to spread a little more generously." Must say, mamita´s feeling like a kid again, in the worst way, and hating it.

I guess I can´t. I just can´t not go. I can´t, precisely because I´ve worked so hard to get to where I am. I have conquered fears and overcome insecurities I never would of thought possible. And, I guess, that if I let myself be bullied around at 35, not much of these years of hard work will have been worth it. I have to practice what I preach. And I can´t look at my sweet children in the eyes and tell them to go stand up for themselves (with mommy close behind) if I´m not brave enough to do it myself.

So here goes nothing. And everything.

This is the funky little closet I made for my sweet G and her beloved dolls.
I used:

Utilizé:

an old wooden crate (I promise to paint... promise!) / un "huacal" viejo (que prometo pintar... ¡lo prometo!)
wire /alambre
pliers / pinzas
an old clothes hanger (or wooden stick to hang the tiny clothes hangers) / un gancho para ropa (o palo de madera para poder colgar los mini ganchitos)
left over fabric / retazo de tela
zig-zag scissor / tijera de "zig-zag"

to make the mini clothes hangers:
fold over stick to shape the round part of the hanger

para hacer los mini ganchitos para ropa:
doble por encima de un palo para darle la forma redonde al ganchito

Calculate how small (or large) you want the hanger to be. Cut. Fold like so:

Twist and twist some more, helping yourself with the pliers.

1. grabed left over fabric / agarré retazo de tela
2. cut a rectangular shape that would cover the front with a zig-zag scissor (to avoid sewing... yes... lazy Sunday) / lo corté en forma rectangular para tapar el frente con tijera de "zig-zag" (para evitar coser... si... flojera de domingo)
3. cut down the middle of the fabric (not all the way to the top) / corté a lo largo del centro de la tela (no hasta arriba)
4. tacked the fabric to the top of the crate / fije la tela con tachuelas (chinches) al la parte superiror del huacal
5. tied the fabric to the side of the crate / amarré la tela a los costados del huacal
6. organized / organizé
7. celebrated / celebré

My son has been designing my next tattoo (my "Mama Bear" tattoo) and right in the middle of all the excitement we came across Hidden Eloise and her amazing talent.

Mi hijo ha estado diseñando mi próximo tatuaje (mi tatuaje de "Mamá Oso") y justo en medio de toda la conmoción descubrimos a Hidden Eloise y su increíble talento.

Having lived with a deep love for fairytales most of my life, her work inmediately pulled me in and reminded me of the storybook fantasy I floated in half of the time as I was growing up.

Habiendo vivido con un profundo amor por los cuentos de hadas clásicos la mayor parte de mi vida, su trabajo me sedujo recordándome la fantasía de cuento en la que pasé la mayor parte de mi infancia.

My G got a look at this and was on a roll drawing and drawing away. He´s been nervous about the fact that his drawing is going to be irreversibly inked into mommy´s arm, but this beautiful artist inspired him to create fearlessly (plus, I think my 11 year old is completly smitten with her)

Sometimes I need to remember my boy was once a baby. A sweet. Fat. Baby.

Now, we all know babies come in all shape and sizes... mine? He could barely sit up by himself he was SO darn FAT! Look at those legs! They´re like gigantic german sausages! (my mini man was born weighing almost 9 pounds) Oh.... I needed a laugh! Have a beautiful day, beautiful people!

Featherless Dreamcatcher Tutorial / Atrapasueños sin Plumas: Tutorial

You will need:
*small doilie
*embroidery hoop (or any kind of hoop)
*strips of fabric (recycle what you have lying around!)
*hot glue gun *white cotton strin
*beading thread
*needle
*beads and little treasures hidden in boxes that would otherwise go unused

Necesitarás:
*doilie (tapetito)
*aro para bordar (o cualquier aro)
*tiras de tela rasgada (¡recicla lo que encuentres por la casa!)
*pistola de silicón caliente
*cuerda de algodón blanco
*hilo de pescar
*aguja
*cuentas y tesoritos de joyeros que de otra manera quedarían en el olvido

Wrap and glue fabric (tute HERE)

Envuelva y pega la tela (tutorial AQUÍ)

Embroidery hoops have 2 parts (one inside the other), take them apart. I used both hoops and made 2 dreamcatchers

Los aros para bordar tienen 2 partes (uno dentro del otro), separa las piezas. Yo utilizé ambos aros e hice 2 atrapasueños

Using the beading thread and the needle, start wrapping the thread around the hoop and through the highest part of the doilie, joining both tightly together. Once you´re finished (BEFORE you tie the knot) tighten the thread once again (sort of like tightening shoelaces from the bottom up).

Usando el hilo y la aguja, empieza a envolver el aro, uniendo con el doilie, apretando conforme avanzas. Una vez que hayas terminado (ANTES de amarrar con un nudo) aprieta una vez más el hilo (como cuando aprietas las agujetas de un zapato de abajo hacia arriba).

Once you´ve made it all the way around and tightened the thread, tie a tight knot joining both ends of the beading thread.

Una ves que hayas dado toda la vuelta, y apretado el hilo, amarra unfuerte nudo uniendo ambos extremos del hilo.

Push the doile down towards the "bottom" of the hoop and adjust with your hands. This way the hoop will frame the doilie.

Empuja el doilie hacia la parte "inferior" del aro y acomódalo con las manos. De esta manera el aro enmarcará el doilie.

Now, using wooden beads, glass beads, (feathers would be great...I didn´t have any) anything beautiful you find lying around, make the dreamcatcher hangings. I chose to use cotton string (so that it would match the doilie) and have the beads hanging off the very end, but you can make more elaborate hangings. Be sure to leave enough thread or string so as to tie it to the hoop.

Ahora, usando cuentas de madera, vidrio, (las plumas son lo ideal... pero yo no tenía) cualquier cosa linda que encuentres por ahí, crea lo que va a colgar del atrapasueños. Yo escogí usar cuerda de algodón blanco (para que combinara con el doilie) y colgar cuentas grandes hasta el final de la cuerda, pero puedes hacer creaciones mas complejas. No olvides dejar suficiente hilo o cuerda extra para poderlo amarrar al aro.

Once you´ve finished, grab your hangings and pass the extra string through the back of the hoop where the doilie meets the hoop, adjusting the length to where you like it best and separating them as much as you like. Tie them on with a knot. Then enjoy.

Una ves que hayas terminado los adornos, pasa el hilo de cada uno por la parte trasera del aro, donde el doilie se une con el aro, ajustando el largo a donde más te guste y separándolos o juntándolos como más te plazca. Amarralos con un nudo. Y a disfrutar.

My first attempt of a Rosca de Reyes for my little man who always ends up at the ER when he eats one. He loves them though, so I made a small homemade (very different) version for my love and decided to give it an extra touch, a twist, per say... hmmmm... how about some shredded finger?! Awsome idea!
While I was at it I dove right into baking the whole morning through and made my cookies as well.

Pero ama la rosca, asi que hice una versión casera (y bastante diferente) para mi amor y decidí añadirle un toque diferente, por decirlo de alguna forma... esteeee... ¿¡que tal un poco de dedo rayado!? ¡que idea tan increíble!
Ya que andaba en esas opté por invertir mi mañana en hornear e hice mis ricas galletas también.

Thoughts on fear / Pensamientos sobre el miedo

I have a beautiful life. I am truly blessed. I am positive, creative and involved. But lately things are moving around inside. Feelings. I. Feel. Fear.

When my little man fell ill, I began to shut down any chance of fear seeping in by filling my head with must-do´s and keeping busy. I told myself it was in my hands to keep this boy alive. That if he died it would be because I doubted, because I let fear win. It worked ok while we were in the hospital, during his treatments and his recovery, no matter how terrifying those times were. But then, after a while it all started to fall apart. I was too exhausted to keep those walls up, and I crumbled.

Tengo una vida hermosa. Estoy verdaderamente bendecida. Soy positiva, creativa, involucrada. Pero ultimamente algo se está moviendo dentro de mi. Emociones. Siento. Miedo.

Cuando mi niño se enfermó, empecé a cancelar cualquier entrada por la cual se pudiera filtrar el miedo a mi mente, llenándola de deberes y manteniéndome ocupada. Me dije a mi misma que estaba en mis manos mantener a este niño con vida. Si el moría sería porque yo dudé, porque dejé que ganara el miedo. Funcionó bastante bien mientras estuvimos en el hospital, durante sus tratamientos y su recuperación, sin importar lo aterrador que fue ese tiempo. Pero después de un rato todo comenzó a derrumbarse. Estaba demasiado agotada para mantener esos muros en pie, y me derrumbé.

I look back on this time as a moment of profound growth because of the fact that I picked myself up, I cried the tears and I slowly began to trust life again. But every once in a while I have these setbacks.

Recuerdo esos tiempos como momentos de profundo crecimiento porque me levanté, lloré a mares y, lentamente, comencé a confiar de nuevo en la vida. Pero de ves en cuando sufr estos tropiezos.

I understand that these are only moments, that I am worthy and capable of getting back up, of accepting that with my weakness comes also my strength. That I have to give these feelings the importance they deserve and tend to them lovingly, so as to let them go. And repeat the procedure when they decide to come back. I meditate and pray so as to learn. So as to accept. So as to realize that I am not standing at the edge of a precipice filled with loss, illness, abandonment and pain. That, once in a while, my mind plays these horrid little pranks on me. That I am not alone.

Breathe.

Smile.

Entiendo que estos son solo momentos, que merezco, y soy capaz de volverme a levantar, de aceptar que con mi debilidad también viene mi fuerza. Que tengo que darle a estas emociones la importancia que merecen, atenderlos con cariño, para entonces dejarlos ir. Y repetir el procedimiento cuando decidan regresar. Medito y rezo para aprender. Para aceptar. Para darme cuenta de que no estoy parada al borde de un precipicio lleno de pérdida, enfermedad, abandono y dolor. Que, de ves en cuando, mi mente me juega estas bromitas horrendas. Que no estoy sola.

De Regreso a la Realidad: ¡y vaya que fría y ventosa bienvenida!

We´re back from the beach. At least half my brain is. I´ll be posting random pics from our beautiful week in between my normal posts, and my first tutorial after ages of procrastination. Here are a few nostalgic memories

PS: I am proud to say that my little girl has inherited my love for waves and is officially hooked on the boogie board. On our next trip to the beach she´ll be taking her first surf lesson on a tiny board!!!! Yaaaay!!!

Estamos de regreso de la playa. Por lo menos la mitad de mi cerebro lo está. Entre mis posts normales y mi primer tutorial después de años de posponer, estaré publicando fotos al azar de nuestra hermosa semana. Aquí hay algunos recuerdos nostálgicos.

PD: Estoy orgullosa de anunciar que mi pequeña hermosa ha heredado mi amor por as olas y está oficialmente enganchada con la tabla de boogie. ¡En el viaje del año entrante va a tomar su primera clase de surf con una tablita enana! ¡¡¡sssiiiiii!!!

Coffee, Donuts and a Guinea Pig / Café, Donas y un Cuyo

Today we added a new member to our family. A peruvian guinea pig by the name of "Felpa". Yes, I am Peruvian. No, I do not enjoy eating these cute little critters (although I survived the awful experience of having to do so on one of my trips... would run in the opposite direction if I ever found myself in the same stuation again... terrrrrible). Although we already have 1 cat, 2 dogs, 4 koi fish, 1 rooster, 10 hens, 6 chicks and 1 turtle, we thought it might be nice for G to have her first pet. She´s been dying for a guinea pig for a while and we think she´s responsible enough to care for one now. Her maternal instincts are well deveploped and we think that maybe she´ll stop asking for a baby sister if she has something small to care for ... gulp... ya think? Needless to say, while we were at the pet shop mom and dad had to make their obligated stop: coffee and donuts. Mamita hasn´t put on all this weight magically. It´s been hard work!

Hoy le dimos la bienvenida a un nuevo integrante de la familia. Un cuyo peruano de nombre "Felpa". Si, soy peruana. No, no disfruto comer estos adorables seres peluditos (aunque sobreviví la terrible experiencia de tener que comerme uno en uno de mis viajes... correría en dirección opuesta si alguna ves me encontrara en la misma situación... horrrendo). Aunque ya tenemos 1 gato, 2 perros, 4 peces koi, 1 gallo, 10 gallinas, 6 pollitos y 1 tortuga, pensamos que sería lindo que G tuviera su primera mascota. Ha estado muriendo por un cuyo por un tiempo y creemos que ya es lo suficientemente responsable para cuidar de uno. Tiene instintos maternales hiper-desarrollados y pensamos que quizás deje de pedir una hermanita si tiene algo pequeño que cuidar... ¡ay nanita!... ¿creen? Está demás decir que, ya que salimos a la tienda de animales, mami y papi tenían que cumplir con su escala obligada: café y donas. Mamita no ha subido todo este peso por arte de magia. ¡Trabajo me ha costado!

Hola soy Eri y escribo desde Llevo el Invierno, me encanta estar aquí, como invitada para compartir con ustedes un tutorial mientras la hermosa familia de Handmade con amor disfruta de unos deliciosos días en la playa.
La mayoría de mis tutoriales van dirigidos a niños porque tengo 2 pequeños en casa, en esta ocasión voy a compartir la manera de hacer unos moños de hule o plástico para colocarlos en las diademas, creo que esto es muy divertido para los pequeñas niñas , a mi hija Emma le han encantado !

Most of my tutorials are designed for ids because I have 2 little ones at home, this time I will share how to make a plastic bows, putting them in the headbands, I think this is great fun for little girls, my daughter Emma are delighted !

Lo único que necesitan es plástico o hule, 2 cuadros de 20 cms de largo por 10 cms de ancho, yo use confenti, pedazos de tela, stickers y brillantina, pero hay un sinfín de cosas que les podemos poner dentro, también vas a necesitar pegamento, un pedazo de listón y máquina de coser.

All you need is plastic, 2 pieces of 20 cm long by 10 cm wide, I use confenti, pieces of fabric, stickers and glitter, but there are many different materials that we can put inside. you will also need glue, a piece of ribbon and sewing machine.

Primero hay que fijar con pegamento el confeti o la tela en uno de los cuadros de plástico, colocar el otro plástico encima y coser con la máquina los 4 lados, si usted va a poner brillantina puede coser los tres lados y dejar uno abierto para vaciar la brillantilla y después cerrar el lado abierto, colocar el pedazo de listón o tela en el centro del moño y listo !

First, you need to fix with glue confetti in one of the plastic, other plastic put over and sew with thw machine the four sides, if you go to put glitter, you can sew three sides and leave one open, o empty the glitter and the close the open side, place the piece of ribbon or fabric in the center of bow and voilá !

My little sister was born on a 24th of December. For obvious reasons her birthday has always been outshined by someone elses. So, for the past few years my sister´s lovely mother-in-law (who by the way, is not easy to photograph) open the doors of her sweet home and prepares the most amazing dinner filling everything with lights and love for this beautiful pair, bringing both our families together and celebrating Mina´s wonderful day.

Mi hermanita nació un 24 de diciembre. Por obvias razones su cumpleaños siempre parece caminar en la sombre del de alguien mas. Así que, durante estos últimos años, la hermosa suegra de mi hermana (quien, por cierto, no se deja tomar fotos) abre las puertas de su dulce hogar y prepara la cena más exquisita, llenando todo de luces y amor para este lindo par, uniendo a las dos familias y celebrado este día tan especial para Mina.

Last Saturday our house shook. It shook hard. It reminded me of too much and made go blank at once. All I could do was think of getting my children out of the house and down the stairs as fast as possible. This was their first earthquake. I lived Mexico City´s 1985 shake, but my sweets didn´t know what it´s like to loose all control, and hear everything they consider safe and warm roar like a monster. They cried a while, pale as little ghosts, and we all slept in my bed that night. Mommy on one side, daddy on the other, and our 2 most precious little people in the middle. Under warm covers, all we really have is eachother. It´s been a while since i´ve felt so helpless and blessed at once.

El sábado pasado nuestra casa se sacudió. Se sacudió con ganas. Me recordó a demasiado y me cegó al mismo tiempo. Solo podía pensar en sacar a mis hijos de la casa y bajarlos por las escaleras lo más rápido posible. Ese fue su primer temblor. Yo viví el temblor del `85 de la Ciudad de México, pero ellos no tenían idea de lo que se siente perder todo control y oír como, todo lo que consideran seguro y cálido, ruge como un monstruo. Lloraron un rato, pálidos cual fantasmitas, y todos dormimos en mi cama esa noche. Mamita de un lado, papi del otro, y nuestras dos personitas mas preciadas en medio. Debajo de las cobijas calientitas, todo lo que realmente teníamos era el uno al otro. Ha pasado un tiempo desde que me he sentido tan impotente y bendecida a la ves.

Couldn´t Help It / No Lo Pude Evitar

I just couldn´t help it. I had to take a picture of my sweet kiddo getting ready to leave for ~~Yale~~ school. What´s up with this? I know part of this must be my fault, but he´s on a roll now. He saved up for his new shoes and I took him to buy them. He tried them on and loved them, then I told him they looked like shoes off the feet of any university profesor. That was it. He just HAD to buy them after my unconsciously accurate comment. I love him dearly and love the fact that he turning into his own little man. No matter what anyone says.

No lo podía evitar. Tenía que tomarle fotos a mi dulce niño mientas se preparaba para salir a la ~~universidad~~ escuela. ¿Qué onda con esto? Sé que parte de esto debe ser mi culpa, pero ya agarró vuelo. Ahorró para comprarse estos zapatos y lo llevé a la tienda. Se los probó y le encantaron, después le dije que parecían zapatos de cualquier profesor de Historia o Letras. Esa fue la gota que derramó el vaso. Después de este comentario inconscientemente acertado, simplemente TENÍA que tenerlos. Lo amo profundamente, y amo el hecho de que se está convirtiendo en el hombrecito que el auténticamente es. Sin importar lo que nade diga.

This past weekend was a hit. Would I have been able to pull it off without major help? No. I´ve never needed as much help as I do now, and I´ve never been to good at asking for it. But, even though his weekend was just as caotic as mine, hubby stepped up to the plate like I´ve never seen in our 10 years together (and that´s saying A LOT considering he a very involved parent and husband). And he smiled the whole way through (which isn´t something he does under stress). He made it all happen, through hours and hours of traffic, blocks and blocks of unloading, carrying and reloading, and serious lack of sleep. And he still managed to stare at me like a love sick puppy. Weird and wonderful. Just another reason I only find myself loving him more. Gracias viejo... ¡te amo!

Este fin de semana fue un éxito. ¿Podría haberlo logrado sin muchísima ayuda de muchos? No. Nunca he necesitado tanta ayuda como la necesito ahora, y nunca he sido muy buena para pedirla. Pero, a pesar de que su fin de semana fue tan caótica como la mía, mi querido esposo estuvo apoyándome como nunca he visto en nuestros 10 años juntos (y eso es mucho decir considerando que es un papá y esposo sumamente involucrado). Y sonrió durante todo el proceso (lo cual no suele hacer estando bajo estrés). Hizo que todo fuera posible, a través de horas y horas de tráfico, cuadras y cuadras de descargar, cargar y recargar, y seria falta de sueño. Y aún lograba mirarme con cara de cachorro enamorado. Extraño y maravilloso. Una razón más por lo cual solo me hallo amándolo más. Gracias viejo...¡te amo!

Exam results: A cracked meniscus (in 2 different places), sprained tendon and joint fluid not where it should be... all in one little knee... mine. Not as good as I would have hoped. Today another doctor tells me if I can escape surgery, which I´m hoping, praying and visualizing as a fact... i miss walking...

Resultados del ultrasonido: Menisco fisurado (en dos lugares diferentes), esguince de tendón y líquido sinovial paseando por ahí... todo en una sola rodillita... la mía. Respuesta no tan buena como esperaba. Hoy otro doctor me dice si puedo escapar de la cirugía, por lo cual pido, rezo y visualizo como un hecho... extraño caminar...

Just a few pics of bits behind the photoshoot for Luk*ma´s Autumn-Winter Lookbook. We were able to pull it all off in my daughter´s bedroom (as you can see). My crutches were somewhere on the floor, not where they should have been, which lead to me eventually thrown on the bed with the need for pain killers...again... BUT I´m happy-happy because spending so much time on my bee-hind, has allowed me to give the SHOP the makeover it needed, AND my munchkin models were fabulous! Have a beautiful Sunday lovely people!

This is my mom and Isabel. Isabel has been working for my mom for the past 17 years and over the years they have become true friends and companions. They bicker like an old married couple and they laugh harder than you can imagine. They spend hours in the garden, take care of the chickens, tend the vegetable garden and bring life to this home we all share. They are a true example of how long lasting friendship can be found where you least expect it.

Esta es mi mamá e Isabel. Isabel ha trabajado con mi mamá por los últimos 17 años y con el tiempo se han vuelto verdaderas amigas y compañeras. Discuten como una pareja de viejitos y se ríen más fuerte de lo que te podrías imaginar. Pasan horas en el jardín, cuidan de las gallinas, atienden el huertito y le dan vida a este hogar que todos compartimos. My sweeties are learning how to knit. I started off with my little girl, thinking my son wouldn´t be interested, but it turned out I was so wrong. This is a pic of my 5 year old teaching my 11 year old how to knit. A mini teacher ( I actually had a teary-eyed moment here) ... Now they´re knitting Christmas presents for their aunties!

Mis hermosos están aprendiendo a tejer. Comencé a enseñarle a mi nena, pensando que a mi hijo no le interesaría, pero estaba en un grave error. Esta es una foto de mi nena de 5 enseñándole a mi chamaco de 11 a tejer. Una mini maestra (tuve un momento de lagrimita cuando tomé esta foto)... ¡Ahora están tejiendo regalos de Navidad para sus tiítas!

I woke up this morning after a day at home with the kids in the middle of the week, with a stuffy nose, terrible sinus pain, and swearing it was Monday.

I loaded my kiddos + 1 car pool kiddo + me in a cute hat (just to hide my bed-head) and an oversized sweater + all the bottles, carboard boxes, cans, paper and plastic bags that 2 families can accumulate in 3 months if we want to recycle, packed all this into the car and headed for school.

I had promised myself that after that was taken care of I would OBLIGATE myself to spend the morning in bed getting over this horrible flu. I would not sew, I would not do the laundry, I would not think of all the things that are left undone when mommy is indisposed (which is basically N-E-V-E-R), and I WOULD NOT worry about it.

Desperté esta mañana después de un día en casa con los niños a la mitad de la semana, con la naríz tapada, una sinusitis del terror y jurando que era lunes.

Empaqué el auto con mis chicos + la nena que llevo a la escuela + yo con una linda boina (para tapar la cabezota de cama) y un sweter enorme + todas las botellas, cajas de cartón, latas, papel y bolsas de plástico que 2 familias pueden acumular en el transcurso de 3 meses para llevar a reciclar, y partí para la escuela.

Me había prometido que después de ocuparme de todo eso, me OBLIGARÍA a pasar la mañana en la cama superando esta horrenda gripa. No cosería, no lavaría ropa, no pensaría en todas las cosas que se dejan de hacer cuando mami está fuera de servicio (lo cual sucede una ves cada N-U-N-C-A), y NO me preocuparía por ello.

I got home, started making myself breakfast while peeking into my daily planner just to jot down my son´s next dentist appointment, and there it was: HELL IN A SENTENCE. Today was Thursday NOT Monday, and today it was my turn to take lunch to school, not for 1 hungry kid, but for TWENTY. This is something I usually plan 1 week before, AND being the control friek that I am, I lost it! I figure I have such an amount of booger stuffed into my forehead, that it has now officially affected my brain function. So, instead of having one week to buy, plan, cook, etc, I found myself with exactly 1 hour and 15 minutes to boil 20 eggs, make rice pudding for a small army, gallons of orange juice and get it to school before 10am. So I did what, according to the instruction manual living in my head, should always be done when in emergencies like these:

1. Promise to NEVER REPEAT THE SAME STUPIDITY AGAIN

2. Scream, panic, and feel the tears start to rise (supressing them only for fear of having my sinus pain get even worse)

3. Run to the store just around the corner in what I later found out was basically a see-through skirt (no wonder I got all those stares and horns honking...REALLY?! I´m 35, I´m not up for this anymore!)

4. Start to solve the problem as fast as posible, boil eggs, make miracle rice pudding, HAND squeeze 8 oranges (yes, people, no orange-squeezer-thingy)

5. Jump into the car, give husband the deadly stare, have him look back with a huge question mark on his face

6. Drive off, quickly, but safely, making sure not to turn anything over or spill the orange juice

7. Spill it anyways

8. Get to school on time, give lunch to the teacher

9. Start soaking up the orange juice from the bottom of the car with a rag, wring it and repeat until it doesn´t look like a small animal would drown if left on the floor of my car

10. Get home and finish washing and drying the damn thing

11. Run upstairs, explain it all to the hubby, hug him, and crawl to the shower with zero energy left (maybe I should of showered before the hug, right?)

Llegué a casa y comenzé a prepararme un desayuno mientras daba una hojeada a mi agenda solo para apuntar la siguiente cita de mi hijo con el dentista, y ahí estaba: INFIERNO EN UN ENUNCIADO. Hoy es jueves, no lunes, y hoy me tocaba a mi llevar el almuerzo a la escuela, no para un niño ambriento, sino para VEINTE. Esto es algo que normalmente planeo con una semana de anticipación, Y siendo la controladora que soy, ¡perdí los estribos! Supongo que tengo tánta cantidad de moco empotrado en la frente, que ha oficialmente afectado mi funcionamiento cerebral. Así que en vez de tener una semana para comprar, planear, cocinar, etc, me encontraba con exactamente una hora y 15 minutos para hervir 20 huevos, hacer arroz con leche para un pequeño ejército, galones de agua de naranja y llevarlo a la escuela antes de las 10am. Asi que hice lo que el manual operativo que habita en mi cabeza indica que se debe hacer en situaciones de emergencia como esta:

1. Prometer NUNCA REPETIR LA MISMA ESTUPIDEZ

2. Gritar, entrar en pánico y comenzar a sentir como se acercan las lágrimas (reprimiéndolas solo por temor a empeorar la sinusitis)

3. Correr a la tienda cerca de la casa en lo que, después descubrí era una falda practicamente transparente (con razón recibía tántas miradas y claxonazos.... ¡¿DE VERAS?! ¡Tengo 35 años, ya no estoy para estas cosas!)

4. Comenzar a solucionar el problema a toda velocidad, hervir huevos, crear el arroz con leche milagroso. Exprimir 8 naranjas A MANO (si, gente, no tengo una pichiflinqui-exprime-naranjas)

5. Saltar al coche, dirigir mirada matadora al esposo, recibir su mirada de signo de interrogación de regreso

6. Salir manejando de prisa pero con cuidado para no tirar el agua de naranja

7. Tirarlo de todas formas

11. Subir corriendo a la casa, explicarselo todo a mi marido, abrazarlo y arrastrarme a la regadera con la escasa energía que me queda (quizá me debí haber bañado antes del abrazo, verdad?)

Now I´m writing from bed. I´m tucked in under a blanket my mamita knit for me and just finished watching a movie. I made it. I got to lay in bed for a while with no guilt involved. I still can´t believe all the chaos I was able to cram into a few hours, but you know what?, I can´t possibly keep everything under control the whole time. What I CAN do is sit back and laugh a bit, reminding my little self that I do all this becase I LOVE being a mommy, and that, like my sweet, sweet husband says, "Mamita is the magic that glues us together, making this house a home". So, here´s to mommies, boogers and caos. Long live mommyhood and long live this beautiful life!

Ahora escribo desde la cama. Estoy escondida debajo de una frazada que me tejió mi mamita y acabo de terminar de ver una pelicula. Lo logré. Pude acostarme en la cama un rato sin sentimiento de culpa. Aún no puedo creer la cantidad de caos que logré meter en unas cuantas horas, pero, ¿saben qué? no es posible que yo mantenga todo bajo control a toda hora. Lo que SÍ puedo hacer es relajarme y reír un rato, recordándome que hago todo esto porque AMO ser mamá, y que, como mi dulce, dulce esposo dice, "Mamita es la magia que nos mantiene unidos, haciendo de esta casa un hogar". Así que ésta se la dedico a las mamitas, los mocos y el caos. ¡Que viva la maternidad y que viva esta hermosa vida!

These are a few pics from our simple, but happy halloween at home. We don´t trick or treat (and candy is a no-no for health reasons, that´s why I bake so much), so I looked into fun, healthy halloween snacks AND baked my kid´s favorite cookies (recipie HERE)!

Simple Living / Una Vida Simple

I recently read an article (The Tyranny of Trends) that moved me in a way I needed. I´ve always been drawn to the idea of "a simple life". In my point of view, living simply tends to draw our attention towards those things that truly matter. Our loved ones, the way we share our time with them, how we express our love through things made from the heart and how we value the things we have.

Recientemente leí un artículo (La Tiranía de las Tendencias) que me movió de maneras necesarias. Siempre me ha atraído la idea de una "vida simple". Desde mi punto de vista, vivir de una manera sencilla tiende a atraer nuestra atención a aquello que realmente importa. Nuestros seres amados, la manera en la cual pasamos el tiempo con ellos, como expresamos nuestro amor mediante cosas hechas con el corazón y cómo valoramos las cosas que sí tenemos.

My mother did something while I was growing up. I can´t quite put my finger on it though. All I know is that, in one way or another, she taught me how to think outside the box. She left me with this urge to walk away from mass consumption and feeling that if I "go with the flow" I´m just blindly obeying this monster of consumerism that has everything but my own well being in mind. This feeling was only reinforced when it came time for me to be a mommy. I began to realize certain things:

Mi mamá hiso algo con mi infancia. No logro detectar exactamente qué fue. Sólo sé que, de una u otra manera, me enseñó a pensar fuera del molde. Me dejó con esta necesidad de alejarme del consumismo masivo. Y me dejó con la sensación de que si "sigo a la multitud" simplemente estaré obedeciendo a ese mounstruo del consumismo que tiene todo en mente menos mi propio bienestar. Esta sensación solo incrementó cuando llegó mi hora de ser mamá. Empecé a darme cuenta de ciertas cosas:

If I connect my life to this giant monster of consumerism, then I will feed my children with what comercials say is healthy, I will dress them with inexpensive clothing without questioning where it comes from, give them toys that they see on TV and just HAVE TO HAVE (also obediently reacting to what we are told to do by "who knows whom"), I will show my children to do the same with their own children, considering all these things to be "necessities". Then I will speak of the "good old days" when playing for hours on end in the garden with only 2 neighbors and loads of imagination, was a common trait, now inaccessible to modern day children. Imagination does not, by nature, have an expiration date. Happiness, smiling and laughing at simple things is not, by nature, conditioned to external stimuli such as tv, video games, etc. And the capability to live conscious of our surroundings, and how what we do can affect others, is something that our children learn through us.

Si conecto mi vida a ese gigante del consumismo, entonces alimentaré a mis hijos con lo que los anuncios dicen que es sano para ellos, los vestiré con ropa económica sin preguntar de dónde viene, les compraré juguetes que ven en la tele y simplemente TIENEN que tener (también reaccionando obedientemente a lo que se nos dice que debemos hacer por "quien sabe quien"), enseñaré a mis hijos a hacer lo mismo con los suyos, considerando todas estas cosas como "necesidades". Después hablaré de los "buenos tiempos" cuando jugar en el jardín por horas con solo dos vecinitos y una desbordante imaginación era una característica común, ahora inaccesible a los niños del mundo actual. La imaginación no tiene, por naturaleza, fecha de caducidad. La alegría, el divertirse y reír con cosas sencillas no está, por naturaleza, condicionado a estímulos externos tales como la televisión, los video juegos, etc. Y la capacidad de vivir conscientes de lo que nos rodea, y cómo lo que hacemos puede afectar a otros, es algo que nuestros hijos aprenden de nosotros.

I found the following extract that simply and clearly puts into words the reason why we should ask, investigate, or simply be a bit more curious when it comes to shopping:

"Buying something is kind of like voting. When you take out your money and put it into someone else’s hands you are saying, `I support you and this thing you do.´ When you buy a $17.99 doll you are voting for outsourced jobs, sweatshop (and sometimes child) labor with untenable working conditions. You are voting for vague and questionable materials at best and known and dangerous materials at worst ... You are paying for a product that is depleting our environment – a cost that you will pay for in higher fuel costs, higher health costs due to increased cancers and other diseases, and other damages. That doll actually “costs” you a lot of unsavory things on top of your cash.

On the flip side buying from an artisan ... is voting for quality over quantity. A living wage with healthy work conditions. Knowing the source of your goods and the materials they are comprised of. The doll includes these costs and these benefits. Your cash goes toward more than a beautiful, quality, long lasting doll. It goes toward a better world."

Extraje parte de un texto que, me parece, pone en palabras simples y claras la razón por la cual deberíamos preguntar, investigar o simplemente ser un poco más curiosos antes de comprar:

"Comprar algo se asemeja a votar. Cuando tomas tu dinero y lo pones en las manos de otra persona estas diciendo, `Te apoyo a ti y esto que haces.´ Cuando compras una muñeca por $170 pesos estas votando por la contratación de terceros, mano de obra de "sweatshops" (maquiladoras donde se explota a la gente) a veces infantil, con condiciones laborales insostenibles. En el mejor de los casos estas votando por materiales dudosos y cuestionables, y en el peor, por materiales conocidos y peligrosos... Criar hijos conscientes también es invertir en un mundo mejor.

Sometimes I ask myself, why should I obey? Why should I take the "easy" way out? I do not wish to seem unreasonable, but I will not allow my children to sit all afternoon in front of the TV or have video games at home, eat junk food or satisfy uneccesary wants and needs on demand just because this would be easier FOR ME. Because it WOULD be easier. I would not have to pay as much attention to them, give them interesting ways of playing, learning and spending their free time. I would not have to be as much as a mother as I CHOSE to be when I decided to have babies. Parenthood is an art, it is a way of life, a full time job, and I personally choose to be an active part of my children´s education and childhood, teaching them how to be healthy parents when their own time comes. And you know what? It pays off. Far from being seen as the wicked mamita of the west, they thank me. They ask for more family time, our homemade cookie afternoons and can´t wait for the moment when we take them on their handmade shopping trips. Easy? Nope. They still see that other kids have Wii´s and gigantic plastic barbie houses. I guess wanting what one does not have is natural, but loving comunication is key. I wish to help them become aware of what is truly important on their own, not to just impose my point of view. They do not have less, they only have it differently. My little girl gets the fact that Santa Claus is bringing her a wooden doll house, vs the plastic one she saw at the super market, because he makes them by hand, with the help of his dwarfs, of course! It´s all worth it when I get the biggest most excited smile back form my little girl who still knows the meaning of handmade love and can´t wait for Christmas to come.

A veces me pregunto, ¿porqué debería de obedecer? ¿Porqué debería tomar la salida"fácil"? No deseo parecer irrasonable, pero a mis hijos no les permito ver tele toda la tarde o tener video juegos en casa, comer comida chatarra o satisfacer deseos y necesidades innecesarias sobre demada solo porque sería más fácil PARA MI. Porque ASÍ SERÍA. No tendría que prestarles tánta atención, darles maneras interesantes de jugar, aprender y pasar su tiempo libre. No tendría que ser tán mamá como ESCOGÍ ser cuándo decidí tener bebés. La maternidad/paternidad es un arte, una forma de vida, un trabajo de tiempo completo y , personalmente, escogo ser una parte activa de la educación y niñéz de mis hijos, enseñándoles a ser padres sanos cuando llegue su momento. ¿Y sabes qué? Vale la pena. Lejos de ser considerada la malvada mama del oeste, me lo agradecen. Piden más tiempo en familia, nuestras tardes de hornear galletas y esperan el momento de ir a sus viajes de compras de tesoritos hechos a mano. ¿Fácil? No. Ellos aún ven que otros niños tienen Wii´s y enormes casas de plástico para Barbies. Supongo que desear lo que uno no tiene es natural, pero mantener una comunicación amorosa es indispensable. Deseo ayudarles a ver, por su propia cuenta, lo que es realmentente importante en la vida, no simplemente imponer un punto de vista. Ellos no tienen menos, simplemente lo tienen de manera distinta. Mi pequeña entiende el hecho de que Santa Claus le va a traer una casita de muñecas de madera, en vez de la versión plástica que vió en el super, porque lo construye a mano ¡con la ayuda de sus duendes, por supuesto! Todo esto vale la pena cuando recibo la sonrisa más grande y emocionada de mi nena que aún conoce el significado del cariño hecho a mano y espera con la más grande emoción a que llegue la Navidad.
